Billiard chalk is made from mined calcium sulphate, which is mixed with water and colour and combined with mineral oxides in a chemical process before the finished chalk cube is produced in a pressure-vacuum process. Particular emphasis is placed on Gold Star chalk to ensure that it contains no particles of heavy metals or other substances harmful to health.
